But I recommend Thomas Pynchon's Mason & Dixon, about their measuring the Mason & Dixon line in the Americas (and about observing the Transit of Venus). I love that book...or I loved it 10 years ago. I wonder what I'd think now! I just re-read Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, having been intrigued, mystified, and attracted to it in high school.
