Introduction to the 2026 Religious Naturalist / Process Theology Lent Course

I first ran this Lent Course series by Donald Szantho Harrington for the Unitarian congregation in Cambridge in 2014, during which a group of us explored Henry Nelson Wieman’s thinking (a kind of process theology/philosophy) and religious naturalism in general. Harrington’s Unitarian, Lenten Manual from 1980 was not only based upon some of Wieman’s work but also and that of his wife, Regina Westcott Wieman, and since then I've kept this course available for anyone else to work through should they be so minded.

Quite coincidentally, shortly after beginning my project to translate Imaoka Shin’ichirō‑sensei’s (1881–1988) essays back at the end of 2022, I saw a picture of him at his desk in 1985 (then aged 104), writing notes about this very book. I confess that it was unexpectedly pleasing to discover this shared interest.

Anyway, should you wish to follow this Lent Course yourself, please use the following 2026 calendar to find out which day of Lent we are on then click on the link and that will take you directly to the appropriate day’s reading.
